Home CityLibrary MenuMarch is for Murals
Amarillo Public Library’s MakerSpace team is observing National Craft Month with a celebration of mural art. Throughout March, APL patrons will have opportunities to participate in a collaborative mural project and learn more about the murals making Amarillo more beautiful!
March is for Murals is the brainchild of MakerSpace team member Loc Dao. “Public art is thriving in Amarillo, so we want to give our patrons a chance to learn more about the art form and we want to let them help create a mural as well.”
Creating the mural will take the form of a giant paint-by-number installation on the first floor of the Downtown Library, which will be in place during Spring Break, with pre-mixed paint ready for people who want to participate. A specially created coloring page version of the design will be available for kids who are too young to work on the mural itself.
To help the public learn more about murals and mural making, the Library is offering a series of lectures and activities—including one intended specifically for teens and tweens. Here is the complete schedule of March is for Murals events:
Cultivating Creativity – Saturday, March 9 at 2 PM
Join Blank Spaces Murals to learn about the origin of their nonprofit program and the impact the Creative Arts can have on young people and their community. See many of the 67 murals they have created and get the opportunity to speak with directors Shawn Kennedy, Shanda O'Neill, and current interns in a short Q & A discussion following the presentation.
Mural by Numbers – March 11 through 16 from 9 AM to 6 PM
We’re creating a giant paint-by-numbers work of art and we want you to help us make it amazing! Visit the Downtown Library during the week of Spring Break to be part of this beautiful project. Painting the mural may not be appropriate for small children, but we’ll have a coloring page version just for them!
Mini-Murals – Wednesday, March 13 at 3 PM
A teens & tweens event provided by City of Amarillo Beautification & Public Arts Coordinator Cindy Perez—make your own mini mural using scratch boards!
Murals and Public Art: Inspiring Communities for Generations to Come – Saturday, March 16 at 2 PM
Presented by Katt Massey, co-founder of the HOODOO Mural Festival and former City of Amarillo Beautification & Public Arts Coordinator
