Annual Nationwide Sock Drives Collect Socks and Spread Kindness

Amarillo Public Library is teaming up with the City of Amarillo’s Coming Home Program and United Way Youth Leadership Council to participate in SOCKTOBER—a nationwide idea to collect the item most requested in homeless shelters—NEW SOCKS!

SOCKTOBER began in Arkansas in 2011, when a group of high school students approached founder Brad Montague looking for a way to help their community’s unhoused population. Montague contacted a local homeless shelter and learned that new socks are one of the most needed—but least donated—items. SOCKTOBER was born!

For Amarillo’s version of SOCKTOBER, all five Amarillo Public Library locations will be collection points where NEW, adult-size socks can be dropped off. Coming Home will collect the socks, which the United Way Youth Leadership Council will include in Care Kits they are assembling for individuals in need. Coming Home will then distribute the Care Kits to our neighbors in the community.

The Youth Leadership Council expects to distribute 1500 Care Kits, so the SOCKTOBER goal is to collect at least 1500 pairs of NEW socks!
