Amarillo Public Library is delighted to announce a free event with Lauren Tarshis, author of the popular I SURVIVED series of books for young people.
Ms. Tarshis’ latest title, I Survived the Dust Bowl, 1935, is the thrilling story of an 11-year-old boy who risks his life to save his family and friends during the worst storm of the Dust Bowl era, which would come to be known as Black Sunday.
The Dust Bowl era of the 1930s was the worst environmental disaster in American history, killing hundreds and forcing thousands of refugees to flee the southern High Plains to escape starvation and sickness. The Texas Panhandle was one of the regions hardest hit by the disaster—including the Black Sunday storm, so the latest I SURVIVED title is of particular interest to our area.
The free event will take place on Thursday, October 23 in the Grand Plaza at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex. Doors will open at 5:30, with the program beginning at 6 PM.
Burrowing Owl Books will be on hand with I SURVIVED books available for purchase and signing.
Lauren Tarshis has been writing the New York Times bestselling I SURVIVED series for 15 years. Each book in the series—starting with 2010’s I Survived the Sinking of the Titanic—tells a story of young people and their resilience and strength in the midst of unimaginable disasters. While the books are fiction, Ms. Tarshis completes exhaustive research on each topic and the books include a section of nonfiction back matter with more facts and photos about the real-life event.
I Survived the Dust Bowl, 1935 is the 25th book in the series.
