September is Library Card Sign-up month, and if you don’t have an Amarillo Public Library (APL) card, this is the perfect time to sign up! Of course, your APL card allows you to explore countless other worlds through the books, movies, and audiobooks in its collection, but if you thought that was all there is to life with a library card, you are in for a great surprise! Your library card is one of the most powerful tools available to Amarillo residents—and it’s free! Here’s a quick look at just a few exciting ways you can use your card:
1. Download comics, ebooks, and audiobooks
Amarillo Public Library cardholders have access to books on the go through apps like the CloudLibrary, Boundless, and Comics Plus. All you need to do is download the apps and log in with your library card number and PIN. Other online reading options include the TumbleBook Library for kids, access to the Wall Street Journal, and downloadable magazines through PressReader (Coming Soon).
2. Visit Area Attractions
Thanks to our partnerships with the Amarillo Zoo, Don Harrington Discovery Center, and Wildcat Bluff, APL cardholders can check out a pass that allows the whole family to visit one of these great organizations at no charge!
3. Learn a Language
Amarillo Public Library offers free English as a Second Language and Spanish as a Second Language classes. These classes are available to everyone, but cardholders also have access to Transparent Language, which provides online access to lessons dozens of different languages.
4. Repair Things or Create Something New
In the APL MakerSpace, (located in the Downtown Library) cardholders have access to tools and supplies for 3D printing, paper crafting, leather working, jewelry making, sewing & quilting—and even a longarm quilting machine. A nominal fee may be charged for supplies such as paint or 3D filament, but many supplies are available at no charge.
5. Start a Garden
A partnership with the High Plains Food Bank means APL cardholders can “check out” vegetable, herb, and flower seeds for starting or expanding a home garden. Visit the Downtown Library to explore the Seed Library and make your world more beautiful and more productive!
6. Get Help with Job Searching
Through the Amarillo Public website, job seekers can access tools to create a professional resume, complete online job applications, and even find advice for acing the interview. Job training and test preparation tools such as Learning Express Library, Udemy, and the Chilton Library are also available to help you learn new skills and earn certifications.
7. Use a computer and free Wi-Fi
Cardholders have access to computer labs available at all five library locations. Patrons can use a computer for 90 minutes at no charge and can login to patron Wi-Fi on their own device. Printing is available at just 15 cents per page.
