The next Friends of the Amarillo Public Library book sale takes place September 6 through 8 and Texas Panhandle book lovers will want to mark their calendars.

Amarillo Public Library Coordinator of PR and Programming Stacy Clopton says book sales provide valuable funds for library projects, while allowing shoppers to build their own personal library.  “The Friends support the library by funding projects which not financed with taxpayer dollars.  The Summer Reading Club is a good example.  It provides summer programs for individuals and families and rewards readers of all ages for creating a regular reading habit.  It is a very expensive program and is entirely paid for by the Friends.”  Other projects funded by the Friends of APL include author visits, craft supplies, special equipment, and more.  In the last year, the Friends provided funding for murals on the Downtown Library and a colorful wrap for the APL van.

In this brown bag sale, shoppers make their selections from a huge array of books and other media and pay just $7.50 per bag or 3 bags for $20.  Shoppers who bring their own reusable shopping bags (not paper bags) save money by paying just $7 per bag or buying 3 bags for $18.  The Friends group reserves the right to charge extra for extra-large bags, and boxes or bins are not permitted in the book sale area.

The sale begins with a “Friends Only” night on Friday, September 6 from 6:30 to 9 PM.  On Saturday, the sale is open to the public from 9 AM to 6 PM; and on Sunday, shoppers can pick up bargains at just $5 per bag.

2024 Friends memberships are available for purchase at all APL locations and people can even buy a membership at the door when the sale begins at 6:30.  Memberships are $10 for individuals or $25 for families.

Members of Amarillo College’s Presidential Scholars Program will be at the sale assisting shoppers with bag storage and transport and will use tips received to support the Chris Macon Memorial Scholarship.

The sale takes place in the basement of the Downtown Amarillo Public Library.
