June 4 & 9 - The American Revolution: The Times that Try Men’s Souls (July 1776 - January 1777) - Contd.

This episode focuses on a critical period during the American Revolution, highlighting the challenges faced by General George Washington and the Continental Army as they defend against British forces. Key events include:

  •  Defeat in New York: details how British General Howe decisively defeated Washington at the Battle of Long Island, forcing the Americans to abandon New York City. This was a significant setback for the Continental army, leading to a retreat across New Jersey.
  • Regrouping and Counterattack: after fleeing New ork, Washington's army regrouped and launched a surprise attack on the Hessian forces in Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776. This victory was crucial in boosting the morale of the American troops and the public.

  •  Winter at Valley Forge: The episode touches on the harsh winter conditions faced by Washington's troops at Valley Forge, where they endured significant hardships but emerged stronger and more unified.
