Amarillo's community reading program is now in its 2nd year.  The program began in early 2008 as a partnership between the Amarillo Public Library, Amarillo Globe News and Hastings Entertainment.  Since then, Amarillo Opera, Carson County Square House Museum, West Texas A&M University, and Amarillo College have all participated in AMARILLO READS.  The first book selection, was Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns, in association with Amarillo Opera's performance of Carlisle Floyd's opera based on the book.  Cold Sassy Tree was followed by Barbara Park's young reader series, Junie B. Jones. In the fall of 2008, AMARILLO READS, took its partnership with Amarillo College to a new level by joining forces with AC's COMMON READER to feature All Over but the Shoutin' by Pulitzer Prize winner, Rick Bragg.  AMARILLO READS was a 2008 winner of the Highsmith Library Award.
