How to Go Somewhere on the Web...And Get Back!
If you don't know exactly where you want to go, you can
surf!
To surf is to follow links wherever they and your
curiosity take you. To find links to follow, look for
underlined text that is a different color from the main
text color on the page. Or move your mouse pointer
around, passing it over the graphics on the page, and
when you're over a link,
the cursor will turn into a pointing hand. Click, and
you'll follow that link to a new place.
If you know the URL (aka Uniform Resource Locator,
location or address) of the place you want to go, type
it into the Netsite or Location field near the top of
the Netscape screen. (Right now the address of this page
is shown there.) Hit enter, and if you've typed
correctly and the page you've requested exists, you'll
go there.
Tip: URLs don't have any spaces in them.

If you have a name or concept you want to look up on the
Internet, you can search for it using one of the popular
search engines. Click the "Net Search" button
on the Netscape directory button bar (just below the
location field) and Netscape will bring up a search
engine. Type in the name or keywords you're looking for,
click "Search", and the search engine will
return the results.

When You Find a Cool Site...
You'll want to come back again. To save the location of
a site, click Bookmarks at the top of the Netscape
screen. On the menu that drops down, click Add Bookmark.
The location of the page you are presently viewing is
added to your list of bookmarks. To go to a bookmarked
page, pull down Bookmarks again and choose the site from
the list that appears. Bookmark this page, then get
lost and use the bookmark to get back to this page.

Stop!
This is Taking Too Long...
If you find yourself waiting endlessly for a page to
appear, you can click the Stop button at the top right
of the Netscape toolbar. The page will stop downloading
to your computer. If you find yourself staring at a
partial page, with no useful links on it, use the Back
button or a bookmark to get back to someplace familiar.
One way to speed things up, short of buying a faster
modem, is to view only the text of the web pages. Pull
down Edit, select Preferences, select Advanced, and then
un-check Automatically load images.

There's So Much Good Stuff Here!
You'll want to print some pages you find, or save them
to a file. To print, use the Print button on the
Netscape toolbar, or pull down the File menu and choose
Print. Either will get you a print dialog box that lets
you choose number of copies and other options, or simply
click OK to send the current page to the printer. To
save to a file rather than print, click the Print button
on the toolbar and then check the Print to file checkbox
on the print dialog, then click OK. A dialog will appear
in which you can name the file and choose the directory
to put it in.

Home
is a Just a Click Away...
But home may not be anyplace you recognize. Netscape is
initially set up to take you to Netscape's home page
when you click the Home button on the Netscape toolbar.
To reset Home to a page of your choosing, pull down
Edit, select Preferences, select Navigator under
Category on the left of the dialog. Under Home Page,
next to Location:, type the location of the page you
want to be Home. Or you can click the Browse button and
navigate to the name of the page on your computer to be
your Home page. Click OK at the bottom of the dialog
box. Now whenever you click Home on the Netscape toolbar
you will go to the page you designated. The browser will
also show that page each time you start it up.

Now that you can get around, where will you go?
There are many lists of links to education- and
kid-related sites on the web. Try starting at Yahooligans
for kids.
